Supporters Club To Grace London Olympics
The President-General, Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Dr Rafiu Oladipo, says that Nigeria’s non-qualification for the football event of the London 2012 Olympics will not deter its members from attending the Games.
Oladipo told newsmen on Wednesday in Lagos that the club would be at the Olympics “to support sports generally.
“We are not mainly for football; we are for other sports too. The fact that we did not qualify for the football event does not mean we cannot support Nigeria in other sports.
“We are football and other sports supporters club and not only football. So, we will be at the Olympics to support Nigerian athletes in other sports. ’’
According to him, members of the club were at all the venues at the 2003 All African Games in Abuja and will also be at all venues where Nigerians will feature in the Olympics.
Oladipo, who is also the President-General of the African Football and Other Sports Supporters Club (AFOSSU), said that AFOSSU would also mobilise its members to the Games.
“As the name specifies, in AFOSSU we are not mainly for football but for all sports.
“So, at the Olympics, AFOSSU members will also mobilise support for other African countries contesting against others. ’’
He added that the Games would also afford AFOSSU’s executive members the opportunity to meet and deliberate on the way forward for the union.
The president-general said that members of the club would leave with as many as 100 members for the Games and would leave with Team Nigeria.
“We have almost formalised arrangements with the Nigeria Olympic Committee to travel with Team Nigeria for the Games. ’’.
He said that the club had completed arrangement for accommodation, feeding and other logistics for the Games.
