The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called on Muslims and Christians to use the Easter season to reflect on the situation in the country.

He made the call on Saturday in Abuja in a letter addressed to Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to mark the Easter celebration.

The letter was signed by Dr Abdul-Lateef Adegbite, Secretary-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) on behalf of the Sultan, who is the President of the Council.

He said that adherents of both religions must resolve to effect changes that would ensure real development and meaningful progress in the land.

The Sultan said Muslims and Christians should join forces with the authorities to tackle the twin evils of corruption and insecurity that were threatening to consume the nation.

“We should mobilise our followers to cultivate those values and virtues extolled by our great religions: Christianity and Islam.

“In particular, we should stress the virtue of personal integrity which teaches us not to cheat, not to steal and not to take or give bribes.

“In this way, public funds would be safe in the hands of those to whom they are entrusted and corruption would disappear from the realm,” he added.

Abubakar warned that national development could not be achieved in a state of insecurity, and urged Nigerians to cooperate with the authorities to secure the nation.

“We should mobilise all faithful to be security-conscious by reporting every suspicious movement to the nearest security outfit.

“A secure and corruption-free Nigeria will earn the country greatness to the pride of all,” the Sultan said.
