Quality of Volleyball Amazes WAUG MVP
The Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the men’s volleyball event of the 13th West Africa University Games (WAUG), Mr David Lawal said that he was astonished by the quality of the volleyball competition.
He told newsmen in Ilorin at the weekend, shortly after he was announced as the event’s MVP, that the high standard of the competition really surprised him.
“I was not expecting what I saw here. Honestly, I was surprised by the high standard displayed here by all competitors, in spite of my being chosen as the MVP.
“We really worked hard for the gold medal, yet we were stretched to our limits as the competition was stiff,’’ he said.
Lawal, who is a member of the volleyball squad of the University of Lagos that won the gold medal, said that he never expected such a high level of play in the volleyball event.
He said that he initially felt that since the tournament was “just a universities games’’, it would not really overstretch his team.
Lawal, nonetheless, conceded that he was quite happy that his team won the competition, adding that he and his teammates really worked for the victory.
“It is a thing of joy to win but we really worked hard for it. Above all, God was on our side.
“In addition to that, I had prepared myself for the MVP award. My teammates were aware of my intentions and they rallied round me to ensure I won the award,’’ he said.
NAN reports that eight teams, drawn into two four-team pools, took part in the volleyball competition at the University of Ilorin, venue of the Games.
