Opaka Wins NUJ Polls In Rivers
The incumbent Chairman of the Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr Opaka Dokubo, of The Tide Chapel, last night, garnered 211 votes to pull a moon slide victory in a keenly contested election that saw his opponent, Baridorn Sika of Radio Rivers polling 83 votes.
With a total cast votes of 297, incumbent Secretary of the union, Stanley Job Stanley of Radio Rivers, won a second tenure with 179 votes against Jim Udede Opiki of Independent Monitor who got 110 votes.
The Consolidation Team of Opaka Dokubo also contested and clinched the position of Assistant Secretary, with Anayo Onukwugha of Federated Correspondents Chapel beating Boye Salau of The Tide Chapel 186 to 105 votes.
The incumbent Treasurer, Uche Agbam of Rivers State Television walloped Okechukwu Maru of Rivers State Ministry of Information and Communications Chapel, 194 to 94 votes.
A total of 26 votes were voided at the election, which saw three other officers, Ayo Tamuno of State Information Chapel returned opposed as vice chairman, Barth Ndubuwah of Weekly Watch/Weekly Star Chapel as financial secretary, and two-term financial secretary of the council, Collins Barasimeye of The Tide Chapel for the position of auditor.
The new executive now has three years to deliver on its promises and commitments to the union in the state.
