Market Chairman Blames Fire Incident On Electric Fault
The Chairman of Slaughter market at the Oginigba axis of Trans-Amadi, Mr. Okeh Chukwu, has said that last Wednesday’s fire incident that gutted the market was as a result of electrical fault from a batcher close to the market.
Mr. Chukwu who stated this while speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt said that the fire did not start from the market itself, but that there was an electrical problem that developed from the batcher, which eventually got out of control and spread to the market.
He described the incident as an unfortunate one which had occurred at a time when some of the traders were trying to adjust to the current trends of events, including the on-going demolition of structures within the metropolis.
The chairman also stated that many shops were burnt in the fire out-break which he said, resulted to loss of valuable goods worth over several millions of naira.
One of the problems he said they face within the area is overcrowding which he said had given room to many issues, which they ought not to experience, adding that the issue of overcrowding gave room to building of structures very close to another, which was the main reason why the electrical fire from the said batcher, spread to the market.
It would be recalled that a fire outbreak gutted the slaughter market last Wednesday in which some stores were burnt, but the cause was not immediately known.
