Man, 60, Docked For Possession Of Arms

The authorities of the Rivers State Police Command has dragged a 60 year old man, Cyracus Enwerem before a Port Harcourt Chief Magistrate Court presided over by E. C. Woke for illegal possession of arms.

The 60 years accused person, who hails from Abara in Etche Local Government Area of the state is standing trial on a one count charge bordering on illegal possession of fire arms and other related offences.

The state prosecuting Counsel, Ephriam Harry informed the court that the accused person on the 4th day of April 2012 at about 1100hrs at Abara Etche in the Port Harcourt District did have in his possession 16 locally-made-guns, seven constructed hand made gun engines, four tins of gun powder.

The prosecution further said that the accused person was arrested in possession of three drilling machines, one viz machine, one saw blade, six live cartridges and seventeen expended cartridges adding that the accused person was unable to give satisfactory account over the items when he was been interrogated.

He told the court that the accused person committed an offence punishable under section 27 (1) (a) (i) (iv) of the firearms Act Cap F 28, laws of the Federation 2004 and should not be granted bail.

In his ruling, the presiding Chief Magistrate, E. C. Woke granted the accused person five thousand naira (N5000) bail with two sureties in like sum. The sureties must be a civil servant on salary grade level 12 and above and should further have a landed property within the jurisdiction of the court. The case was later adjourned to 4-07-2012 for continuation.
