The Chairman of Ishiellu Local Government Area in Ebonyi, Mr Obinna Nwachukwu has warned the indigenes of the area to desist from engaging in land disputes.

In an interview  The Tide in Abakaliki on Thursday, the chairman said land disputes posed great threat to communal security.

Nwachukwu said the warning was important to those who were involved in the lingering land dispute between the Umuode families of Imeoha village in Nkalagu which had resulted in litigation.

He said the land, more than85 hectares, is situated on the Enugu-Abakaliki express road.

Our correspondent reports that a similar land dispute between the Ezillo and the Ezza communities in the area led to the fratricidal war which claimed hundreds of lives and destruction of property in 2008.

“There is the need for concerted efforts by people of the area to ensure peace after the setback caused by conflicts occasioned by land disputes.

“I was not notified officially by the family before now, but with the present situation, I will investigate and evolve ways of proffering possible solutions.

“Families involved in such dispute should repose confidence in the ability of the council to resolve it; I learnt of it through the letter given to me by the counsel to the Umuode family,’’ he said.

The council boss invited the family for dialogue so that issues surrounding the land could be resolved amicably.
