Jesus Cup Champions Seek Govt Assitance
Baptist Church Football team of Ahoada, in Rivers Sate, winners of the maiden edition of “Jesus Cup Football Tournament” organised by United Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (UYSFON) among churches in the state has appealed to the state government and multi-nationals to assist them financially.
The proprietor of the club, Dr Ikechukwu Obuzor made the appeal shortly after he received the trophy won by his players, at the weekend in Port Harcourt.
Dr Obuzor explained that the financial assistance is to enable the team represent the country in an invitational tournament billed to hold later this year in Spain.
According to him, his major reason for sponsoring football clubs is to ensure that there is rapid growth of grassroots football in the state.
“I am proud to inform you that I love the game of football, besides that my clubs have been winning several trophies. I also have Obuzor Queens”, he said.
He expressed joy over some of his players who are now playing for Dolphins FC and God round FC in the state, saying that the club is geared towards encouraging sports and academics.
“I am happy that some of my players have been selected to play for Dolphins and Go-Round FCs. My aim is to ensure that they play football to the highest level,” he stated.
Earlier, the president of UYSFON, Chief Godspower Kokoriko said the organisation’s aims and objectives are geared towards developing sports at the grassroots levels.
Chief Kokoriko also appealed to the state government and multi-national companies to sponsor the winners of Jesus Cup to attend the invitational tournament in Spain.
He used the forum to commend the Commissioner for Sports in the state, Hon. Fred Igwe over his initiative to develop sports in the state.
