House Committee Seeks Adoption Of Diaspora Day

The House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora in Abuja said it would work in collaboration with government to ensure that August 1, was adopted as the Diaspora Day in the country.

Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Abike Dabiri-Erewa (ACN –Lagos), dropped the hint at a meeting with the High Commissioner of Trinidad and Tobago to Nigeria, Mr Nyahuma Obika .

According to the Erewa, the day will also be used to honour Nigerians in Diaspora who have distinguished themselves in various fields of human endeavour .

She said that the Committee would also work hard to involve the African Union in the celebrations.

The legislator urged Nigerians to participate in the celebration of the emancipation of Africans from slavery.

Erewa said that in spite of the abolition of slave trade, African leaders had subjected their people to abject poverty.

She said that the celebration of Diaspora day would be beneficiary to all Africans.

Earlier, Obika said Nigeria was well positioned to lead in the quest for the observance of the abolition of slave trade.

He described the slavery days as a difficult period in the history of Trinidad and Tobago and other countries.

Rep. Ganama Titsi (PDP-Adamawa), a member of the committee, said that the call for the observance of abolition of slave trade was a challenge for the committee.
