Ndi-Igbo Unity Forum, an NGO, has urged the Federal Government to confirm the appointment of Mr Mohammed Abubakar as the substantive Inspector-General of Police.

The Campaign and Publicity Secretary of the group, Mr Uzor Uzor, told newsmen in Onitsha, last Saturday that Abubakar needed the confirmation as a motivation to re-double his efforts and to effectively confront the security challenges in the country.

Abubakar took over on January 25 in acting capacity, replacing Mr Hafiz Ringim, the former IGP, who retired in March.

“We have been monitoring his performance and he has performed beyond expectation, more especially as he has adopted the intelligence approach to policing.

“We are grateful to him for insisting that road blocks must be dismantled since it had been observed that road blocks throughout the country had not played any role in checkmating criminality.

“We want to call on Mr President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, to confirm him and make him a substantive IGP in order for him to concentrate more on the job.

“We also discover that he has been facing series of family challenges, especially the death of his wife and recently his mother.’’

Uzor said the appeal became necessary as Abubakar had already stayed about three months on the job, while he had taken practical steps on police reform and acceptability.

“The forum believes that he has the willpower to transform and put the Nigeria Police in a professional footing and restore public confidence on the organisation,’’ he said.
