The Gombe State Government will spend N7 billion to provide facilities at its College of Education, Billiri, and School of Basic and Remedial Studies, Kumo.

The Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr Isa Wade disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Gombe on Wednesday.

Wade said that government would spend N4 billion to provide basic remedial programmes and vocational and technical education at the School of Basic and Remedial Studies.

He said that the government had entered into agreement with the University of Maiduguri to organise a seven-month remedial programme for 1,000 candidates from Gombe.

The commissioner added that government paid fees and accommodation for the students, adding that after the programme, candidates who remedied their results would be admitted into the university.

Wade also said that the government would spend N3 billion on the college of education.

According to him, the establishment of the college is based on the understanding that there are inadequate primary school teachers in the state.

He said the report of a committee set up by the government showed that Gombe had more than 1,000 primary school teachers who could not effectively impart knowledge because they did not possess the National Certificate in Education (NCE).

The commissioner said the establishment of the college was aimed at addressing such problem as well as to ensure that many applicants from the state who wished to further their education got the opportunity to do so.
