ESUT Probes Illegal Admissions
The Vice Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Prof. Cyprian Onyeji, has constituted a panel to investigate the involvement of the staff of the institution in illegal admissions.
A statement by the Director of Public Relations, Mr Ossy Ugwuoti, last Saturday in Enugu stated that the panel would investigate the circumstances behind the illegal admissions which led to the expulsion of 544 students.
According to the statement, the panel will also review protests from some of the expelled students.
It also said that any student found to have been expelled in error would be recalled while staff implicated in the unwholesome act would be disciplined.
The statement further quotes Onyeji as saying that ESUT had zero tolerance for examination malpractice.
The statement added that 11 students had been expelled while 14 others were suspended for their involvement in examination malpractice.
It also said that the institution had adopted measures to encourage academic excellence among students, saying it gives scholarship award to students who make a cumulative grade point average of 4.50.
“Such students will enjoy free tuition for one academic year and such students will retain the scholarship, study freely until they graduate, if they score up to 4.0 in their subsequent years of study,’’ it said.
The statement added that the institution had initiated two programmes to reward excellence in teaching and research among its academic staff.
The awards are the distinguished teachers and distinguished researcher wards.
It further stated that the awards were instituted to motivate the academic staff to excel in their various areas of study and that each winner would be given N3 million.
