Egi Gas Leakage: Total Gets Two-Wk Ultimatum

The four communities in Egiland in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, affected by the Total Nigeria gas explosion have threatened to shut down all oil and gas operations in the area, if Total Nigeria does not take urgent remediation measures to stem the devastation caused by the company’s ruptured gas plant located in the area.

The communities mostly affected by the gas eruption are Obite, Obieyebe, Egita and Ogbogu which play host to the multi-billion naira gas facility owned by TotalFina Elf while the devastation is spreading fast to virtually all the seventeen communities in Egiland and beyond.

Our investigations revealed that the rupture was first sighted on April 4, 2012, and virtually three weeks after, the explosion is yet to be remediated with its inherent problem on the lives and eco-system of the area.

The Tide gathered from stakeholders, including paramount rulers, politicians, Community Development Committee (CDC), women and youths that 12 leakages
