The Ebonyi State Government said it would merge the three campuses of the state-owned university into one.

The university currently operates a three-campus system with two situated in Abakaliki and the other at Ezzamgbo.

Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Chike Onwe,  disclosed this in Abakaliki, while briefing newsmen on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting.

Onwe said the Ezzamgbo campus would now serve as the permanent site of the university.

“The state Ministry of Lands, Survey and Housing has been mandated to liaise with the university authority to ascertain the actual boundaries of the land at the campus.

“This measure is to enable the government to commence the process of developing the campus, after which the merger would be effected.

“The process will, however, be gradual in order not to cause distortions which will hamper the smooth operation of the institution.”

The Commissioner said the council also expressed dissatisfaction at the poor representation of Ebonyi indigenes in federal establishments.

”Council noted that most of the state’s chances at the federal level were traded by those who have the opportunity of getting them.

“Council also frowned at the issuance of identification letters to non-indigenes by some traditional rulers and local government chairmen.

“Henceforth, such practice would not be condoned as appropriate punitive measures would be meted to culprits to serve as deterrent to others.”

According to him, government has directed that a data bank of all unemployed youths in the state should be developed.

“The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has been mandated to open 26 registers, two for each of the 13 Local Government Areas of the state.

”One of the registers would take care of those with Ordinary Level certificates while the other would be for all graduates in the areas.

”The registers would be reviewed on weekly basis by the Governor to enable him to respond speedily in cases of opportunities for the state indigenes at the federal level.’’
