Delta Sanctions 44 Absentee Teachers

Delta government says it has stopped the salaries of 44 secondary school teachers in the state for absenteeism.

The teachers were alleged to have abandoned their posts for over three months without permission.

A statement by an official of state’s Post Primary Education Board, in Asaba Mr Abraham Fabau said that the sanction was in line with government’s policy that “ no any form of emolument was paid to staff who abandoned their duties.”

The statement indicated that the sanction was the first step in the disciplinary measure to be applied on the affected teachers, who included principals and vice principals.

It said the Accountant General of the state had been directed on March 16, 2012 to quickly implement the order, adding that the order would subsist till further notice.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare said in an interview on the directive that the sanction was meant to instil discipline in the school system.

He warned teachers, including those in primary schools, to desist from acts of indolence and indiscipline or face severe sanctions from the government.
