Anambra Assures On Persons With Disability Welfare
The Anambra Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Ego Uzoezie, has said that the state government is committed to improving the welfare of persons with disability in the state.
Uzoezie told newsmen in Awka that the government had initiated measures to improve the skills and welfare of such people to make them self-reliant.
She said the state government had been doing a lot to make life better for them and had empowered the group in many areas.
“They have received more than 500 wheelchairs, crutches and other equipment useful to them as well as cash,” she remarked.
The commissioner also said the ministry had not given the very best to the group but that plans were in progress to ensure that they got the best attention at all times.
The Chairman of the Association of Persons with Disability in the state, Mr Azuka Ofomata, lauded the government for the efforts so far in catering for them.
He suggested that the government should initiate appropriate measures to ensure that financial assistance being given to them was delivered as released.
Ofomata said the association has initiated plans to establish a brail press to provide training on the use of information and communication technology.
He said the project would cost N5 million and asked for a centre where the equipment would be stored and made accessible to the members.
Ofomata, who is also the Director of the Rehabilitation Unit in the state Ministry of Women affairs and social development, urged the government to approve automatic scholarship and employment for disabled persons who were qualified.
He also appealed to the government to employ the services of social welfare workers in the distribution of welfares packages for the disabled.
