The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) in Abuja said it had shifted the commencement of the 2011/2012 Women Professional League from this weekend.

The league’s Secretary, Danlami Alanana, told newsmen that  the competition would now begin on March 17.

“We had earlier planned that the league will begin this weekend, with Week One matches on Saturday, March 3. But now, we will have to start on Saturday, March 17,’’ he said.

Alanana blamed the postponement on the inability of the clubs to beat the deadline for registration.

“There are certain logistics that have been affected by the clubs’ inability to meet up with the registration programme as outlined for them.

“The situation led to some of the clubs not having completed their registration, and this meant that they do not have the complete set of materials to play in our matches,’’ he said.

The NWFL secretary, who is of the Women Football Unit of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), however, disclosed that the league had extended the deadline for registration.

“Registration will now close on March 13 and any club that fails to complete its registration by then will have itself to blame. There will be no extension after that,’’ he said.

The Tide source reports that the league body had earlier this month held the draw for the 20-club competition which is in two groups of 10 clubs.
