Senegal’s Election: President Wade Loses Run-Off, Concedes Defeat
The President of Senegal, Abdoulaye Wade, has accepted defeat in the country’s presidential election.
Wade, according to reports threw in the towel as counting was still underway in the run-off yesterday with his protege and former Prime Minister, Macky Sall.
Wade, 85, failed to win a majority vote during the initial election held last month.
Wade was seeking a third term.
In the initial election, both Wade and Sall failed to get the required majority votes.
While Wade received 32 per cent of the votes cast, Sall scored 25 per cent.
However, the turning point for Sall was that the other 12 candidates that stood for the initial election, who shared among themselves the 33 per cent of the votes cast, stood in solidarity with him against Wade, who came into power in 2000.
About 5.3 million voters took part in the election.
