RSG To Vaccinate Teenage Girls
In line with its focus on preventive healthcare, the Rivers State Government says it would soon embark on the immunisation of teenage girls in schools across the state against cervical cancer.
Commissioner for Health, Rivers State Ministry of Health, Tamunoiyoriari Sampson Parker made this known when he received the executive members of the National Association of Women Journalists (NANOJ), Rivers State Chapter, in his office.
Dr Parker said inspite of the high cost of the vaccines, the government was determined to see that the disease is prevented at the early stage and charged NAWOJ to help in informing the public about the disease and its repercussions.
Parker further said the girls would also be receiving lectures on how to do self examination against breast cancer, adding that the exercise would be routine for all teenage girls in school.
He commended NAWOJ on their campaign against cancers and pledged to do all within his powers to support them in their subsequent campaigns.
Earlier in her speech, the chairman of NAWOJ, Enale Kudu, said that the campaign against cancers carried out by the association recently, created positive impact in the state.
Kudu said already, NAWOJ was partnering with Preventive Healthcare Initiative to do a second round of the campaign against cancer .
She also said that NAWOJ was ready to partner with the state Ministry of Health on women programmes, stating that the association had done much in the area of research on women’s problems and how to reach them.
