The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has embarked on “disaster risk reduction” campaign in secondary schools in Rivers state.

The South-South Zonal Coordinator of the agency, Mr Umesi Emenike announced this last Thursday in Port Harcourt in an interview with newsmen

He said that the campaign would enable the students acquire knowledge on disaster, the risk involved in disaster and how to mitigate its effects.

Emenike said that the campaign launched on March 22, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, for the South-South zone, would be extended nationwide.

On the strategies to be adopted in the campaign to ensure the realisation of its objectives, Emenike said:“We will start with a pilot scheme which will involve 10 secondary schools in each state of the federation.

“The agency plans to establish disaster reduction clubs in all secondary schools across the country as well as form what we call, School Emergency Response Scheme.”

The coordinator said that the scheme was expected to act as ‘a first responder’ to emergency in the various schools and their environs.

He said that some expatriates would be invited to discuss the management of emergency with students in the zone.

“We will discuss issues and challenges in the management of disaster in the South-South because the zone is vulnerable to disaster.”

He said the agency chose secondary school students for the campaign because “they have come of age and understand the meaning of disaster”.

“Children in secondary schools are above 10 years old and we understand that they can handle or identify what constitutes hazard.

“They also have a role to play at home in risk reduction.

“The campaign will make them know how vulnerable they are to disasters, how to avoid the risks and what to do in the case of emergency before help comes,” Emenike said.
