A member representing Degem/Bonny Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Hon. Sokonte Davies, has given a clean bill of health to last Saturday’s congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, saying, the outcome of the congress has ushered a new era of party leadership in the local government.

Davies who made the remarks in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt said party delegates had with a strong voice spoken at the congress and made a change of the party leadership in the area.

He said the outcome of the party congress had successfully doused anxiety and tension among the party members, stressing that it had engendered stability, unity and harmony among all the stakeholders of the party in the area.

The federal parliamentarian noted that the people were happy over the change of the former chairman of the party in particular, describing what had happened on the day of the congress as an anti-climax, considering the anxiety and tension that had built up among party members before the congress.

According to him, God had answered the prayers of those who passionately wanted change of the party leadership in the local government.

The lawmaker explained that the partial change of guard of the party leadership was not an indication that those who did not return to the party exco had not performed well in office but that some other extraneous factors had come to play to facilitate their ouster.

Davies who described those who emerged during the congress as people of tested integrity and character, and party members with fierce loyalty, urged them to live above board, and work towards strengthening the party’s cohesion in the local government.

He particularly commended the choice of the new Women Leader of the party in the area, Mrs. Salome Benibo, describing her as a woman of humble mien and quiet disposition whom he said was “like a mother to all of us”.

He appealed to the party members “in this new era, new expectation and anticipation” to give the new party leaders maximum support. “They should know that without effective followership, there  can not  be a strong leadership. They should eschew criticism for the sake of criticism, bitterness, rancour and rumour-mongering but provide constructive advice,” he pleaded.
