PAC Urges Review Of Reps Quarterly Allocation
The Progressive Action Congress (PAC) has urged members of the House of Representatives to reduce the N27 million given to every member as quarterly allocation.
National Chairman of the party, Chief Charles Nwodo, made the call in Abuja.
Nwodo said the call became imperative given the pervading serious inflation, high unemployment rate, security threat, poverty, falling standard of education and poor medical care, that the citizenry were contending with.
“ I wish the members have gone to the rural areas to gather the statistics of high level of infant and maternal mortality rate and the conditions of Nigerians as a result of poverty in the areas.
“ The accidents on our highways due to bad roads, millions of children dropping out of school due to financial constraint, lack of good water to drink, all these and others are enough reason to stop the alleged allocation,’’ he said.
He suggested that members of NASS should be paid according to the number of their sittings, and the state they represent should take care of their accommodation and other allowances.
“ A country that runs about 28 per cent of its budget in recurrent expenditure cannot measure up with other nations in terms of development.
“ The NASS should have pity on Nigerian youths whose economic future is bleak as a result of the activities of our legislators,” he said
He appealed to the lawmakers to remember that what would count for them was the number of people they could make happy and not how much wealth they amassed while they were in power.
