NURSS Solicits Sponsorship Of Sports Progamme
The National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) worldwide has appealed to the Rivers State Government, well-meaning individuals and corporate organisations in the state for the sponsorship of the maiden edition of its sports programme tagged National Union of Rivers State Students Unity Games (NURSSUG) 2012.
According to a press release made available to Tidesports by the chairman of the Sports Committee and Secretary of the Sports Committee, Wemedo Chima and Barango Joseph Joe, respectively, for the first time in the history of NURSS the union is putting in place a well packaged sports programmes for the students of Rivers State origin.
The statement said that the union decided to embark on these sporting exercise for numerous reasons, which include the resolve to fulfill their electoral promises, unifying Rivers State Students, and easing off academic stress as well as serve as an avenue to disabuse the minds of Rivers students from social vices.
The games would also be used to discover talented youths which would enable the Sports Directorate led by Comrade Wemedo Chima form a formidable sports team for the union.
The union therefore, appealed to its grand patron, the Rivers State governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi to help them actualise the laudable programmes.
The union also appealed to the Hon. Commissioner for sports, Hon. Fred Igwe, his counterparts on Education and Youth Development Ministries and other agencies to please sponsor the games in order to promote sports amongst Rivers students.
The body further appealed to well-meaning individuals and corporate organisations to assist and see their contribution as part of their social corporate responsibilities in the state.
Meanwhile, the table for the sporting event for 2011/2012 Academic Session shows that Sports Festival for undergraduates of Rivers State origin would hold in port Harcourt in May, 2012, while football competition for secondary schools amongst the 23 local government areas (L.G.As) in the state would take place at the Sharks Stadium, in August, 2012.
Finally, a friendly football match with the National Union of Bayelsa State Students is scheduled to hold at the Niger Delta University in Bayelsa State, come December, 2012.
