The Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF) intends to partner with the Royal and Ancient Golf of Saint Andrews, Scotland, to take golf to the grassroots in the country.

The federation’s secretary, Bola Adedeji, told  newsmen in Lagos that the programme was in furtherance of the body’s drive to popularise the sport.

Adedeji added that some secondary schools in Asaba, Delta State would serve as the first port of call in the drive to take the game to the grassroots.

“In the next two weeks we will engage secondary school students within Asaba, to ensure that they develop interest and learn the rudiments of the game at an early stage.

“We are working in partnership with the Royal and Ancient Golf of Saint Andrew in Scotland, they are helping us with equipment which we intend to use for demonstration in schools,’’he said.

The secretary stressed that the GFN was doing everything possible within its means to take golf to the highest level in the country, under the leadership of Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

“We are committed to the development of golf; and to facilitate this development, the Oyinlola administration aims to establish “golf ranges’’ within the six  geopolitical zones in the country,’’ he said.

He stated that the presence of such golf ranges within the geographic zones will stir up individual interest, and attract more interest and the much needed sponsorship to propel the game.
