Lawmaker Seeks Support Of Ogonis In Diaspora

The Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Leyii Kwanee has charged Ogonis in Diaspora to support the present state government led by Governor Chibuike Amaechi in the task of developing the state.

Hon Kwanee gave the charge, Tuesday when the Ogoni in Diaspora Organisation (ODO)USA, paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Port Harcourt.

The Deputy Speaker, who represents Khana Constituency II, in the State Assembly, said the greatest challenge confronting the Ogoni people is how to come together was a united front to set things right and proffer solution to the developmental aspirations of the area.

He explained that the state government is doing its best to improve the lots of the people, noting that brand new schools, health centres and roads are being built in various parts of Ogoniland.

The lawmaker lauded them for the decision to visit projects sites in the area and encouraged them to come home more often to help in sensitizing the youths to be more productive by engaging in legitimate enterprises.

Hon Kwanee also urged the organisation to explore ways of attracting foreign investors to Ogoniland to create employment opportunities for the people and promised to partner with the body to ensure better living standard for the Ogoni.

He intimated that the death of their leader, Ken Saro-Wiwa, has equally helped Ogoni people because more international attention had been given to the people all over the world.

Earlier, the Executive Director of Ogonis in Diaspora Oganisation USA, Chief Ambrose Sobarikor Kii said the body was formed to help aggregate the views of Ogonis outside Nigeria and relaying same to the leaders in Nigeria.

Chief Kii, who led a five-member executive of the Organisation, disclosed that they are working tirelessly to complement the efforts of the government and to encourage further development in Ogoni.

He hinted that the organisation had constituted a committee to visit all projects in the area undertaken by the state government as part of its partnership programme.
