Group Urges Adequate Funding Of Anti-Diabetes Campaign

The Port Harcourt Zonal Council of St Mulumba, has urged adequate funding of anti-diabetes campaign by government and other agencies in the country.

The president of the council, Dr. Joy Ejiofor who said this at seminar organised  by the council at the Coepus Christi Cathedral Port Harcourt described diabetes as one of the highest killer diseases in the country.

She said that, the situation has underscored the need for increased awareness and funding with a view to sensitizing the people on the dangers of contacting diabetes.

Ejiofor insisted that the people’s consciousness on the need for regular medical check ups to ascertain their diabetes status must be stimulated.

“Diabetes  is on the increase with many persons not aware of their status. This deadly and silent killer can be prevented  by a little change in lifestyle”.

She further stressed the need for people to always eat meals about the same time, while daily exercises be carried out.

Also speaking, Dr. Opubo Ambrose-Hart stressed the need for precaution rather cure.

“Medicare is shifting from curative to preventive medicine. I therefore  challenge and encourage you to play a more active role in choosing or using such preventive services as screening tests, lifestyle modification and vaccination programmes in managing your health”, he said.

The Port Harcourt zone comprises Port Harcourt, Corpus Christi Cathedral, Mata Misericodae and Stella Maris sub councils.
