FRSC Vows To Tackle Traffic Challenges

The new Enugu state  Sector  Commander of the  Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has assured motorists in the area of the readiness of the commission in tackling  the rising traffic problem  in Enugu metropolis  and environs.

The new state  sector Commander, Mr. Funmibi Olawoyin,  gave the assurance while speaking with newsmen in Enugu.

He pointed out that his main concern since assumption of  last month centered  on mapping out strategies that could curb the growing traffic and other vehicular related problems in Enugu State before the situation gets out of hand or becomes uncontrollable.

The sector  Commander,  who was  the Federal Capital Territory FCT sector commander, before his new posting remarked that, “I faced the same problem in Abuja, where the movement of people from the suburbs to the towns created heavy traffic on daily basis and at a point became so heavy that we almost could not control it.”

According to him, ”My men and I have taken time to study Enugu State and having known where the traffic will be heavy, we have posted more men to those places and we are sure that our effort will yield results”.

His words: “We are still working and we are not resting on our oars. Our desire is that the free flow of traffic once enjoyed by Enugu people would return in no distant time”.

Mr. Olawoyin expressed concern that the state would not become another Lagos State where it has become extremely difficult to control or curb the surging traffic despite the assistance and efforts of the Lagos State Government.”

He,  however,  drew attention to the presence of Shoprite Supermarket in the heart of the city,  adding that “The Shoprite road could be a problem in the next six months.”

Though the Enugu FRSC boss made it clear that he was not against Shoprite doing business in the state, but argued that the largest African Shopping mall should have been located in a place where traffic would not be a problem.

“In other societies, shopping malls are located on the outskirts, not in residential areas. For the sake of the public, there would be  the need to expand that Shoprite road in the near future”,  he noted.
