Fans Disrupt Kwara Utd, Sunshine Stars Matcha
Irate Kwara fans at the weekend in Ilorin, disrupted the week 12 match between the Kwara United FC and the Sunshine Stars of Akure, 10 minutes before full time.
The fans became unruly and invaded the field when Sanni Mohammed, the Centre Referee from Kaduna State, denied Kwara United what they perceived as a penalty when Bolaji Shakin was allegedly fouled in the 18-yard box.
The Match officials, Sunshine Stars’ players and officials and journalists scampered to safety as the fans invaded the field in a bid to vent their spleen on the referee.
Only the quick intervention of security personnel, who rescued the officials and players of Sunshine Stars from the stadium, doused the tension.
A fan, who pleaded anonymity, told newsmen that the referee ought to have awarded a penalty, and urged the Nigeria Premier League to investigate the match.
Before the disruption of the match, played at the Ilorin Township Stadium, both teams had each scored a goal.
Kwara United opened scoring in the 45th minute through Anthony Okemirin, while Sunshine Stars’ Shakibu Atanda equalised in the 79th minute.
