Chime Urges Scrutiny Of Potential Police Intakes
Governior Sullivan Chime of Enugu State has called on the management of the police force to scrutinise the family background of every intending officer before recruiting them.
Chime, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Sunday Onyebuchi, said while receiving the Presidential Committee on Police Reform that the scrutiny would help to eliminate corruption in the force.
He urged governments at all levels to inject adequate funds into the system to encourage the officers to function effectively.
“I advocate adequate funding of the police to eliminate partisan politics in the system, proper security tools for them to encourage discipline and honesty in the force,’’ he said.
Responding, the Chairman of the committee, Mr Casmir Akagbosu, a retired assistant inspector general of police, assured the governor of the committee’s commitment to eliminate bottlenecks in the force.
He listed the terms of reference of the committee to include tackling challenges and factors militating against effective performance in the force and determining the general and specific causes of the loss of police confidence.
Akagbosu said the committee would also examine the records of police officers to fish out those who were no longer fit to be in service and make adequate recommendations.
