Aviation Expert Harps On Lightning Protection System
The Managing Director of ATNIG Lightning Protection System Limited, Mr. Babalola Olusanya, has stressed the need for a comprehensive lighting protection system at the nation’s airport.
Olusanya stated this at the launch of the company’s integrated lighting protection system in Lagos.
According to him, most airports in Nigeria do not have any comprehensive lightning protection system, adding that this exposes aircraft, facilities and people to damaging effects of the natural phenomenon.
“The most dangerous and critical periods for aircraft as regards lightning and thunder is during take-off and landing. At these periods lightening can be at its most destructive form for aircraft,” he said.
He stressed the need for the introduction of modern lightning protection system as well as advance warning solutions in all functional airports in the country.
He said that some aircraft incidents that took place in the past would have been averted if there were systems in place to detect the build-up of the factors that led to lightning and thunder-storms.
Describing ATNIG as a complete indigenous company created in 2005 to focus exclusively on meeting the lightening protection needs of both private and corporate organisations, Olusanya said that deploying the latest technological solutions to combat the threat of lightning from his company would go a long way in avoiding losses caused by lightning.
These include solution for external lightning protection, over-voltage/surge protection, earthling systems, preventive solutions and exothermic welding.
