An Aba-based lawyer and human rights activist, Mr Olusegun Bamgbose, has urged leaders in the northern parts of the country to stop the activities of the Boko Haram sect.

Bamgbose told newsmen in Aba, Abia, on Thursday that the group was portraying the north in a bad light and affecting the country’s economy.

“Northern leaders should stop the menace of the group. The merciless and unwarranted killings by the group are portraying the north in a bad light.

“The political strength, reputation and hegemony of the north are at stake. Their activities are self-destructive,” he said.

Bamgbose observed that the activities of the group would never make President Goodluck Jonathan to lose focus or derail the transformation agenda.

According to him, the major aim of the group is to frustrate the sincere and genuine effort of Jonathan to transform the country.

“It has become obvious and clear that some unscrupulous and frustrated elements under the notorious and ignoble group called Boko Haram have decided to frustrate the sincere and genuine efforts of President Jonathan to transform the country.

“Their objective is to intimidate the president. They want to instill fear into him. Let me, however, inform them that they will not achieve this.”

Bamgbose, the National Coordinator of Concerned Advocates for Good Governance, affirmed that the unwarranted and merciless killings by the group had painted the north in bad light.

He urged the leaders to prevail on the sect to desist from the unlawful acts.
