The Executive Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Prince Timothy Nsirim, has rewarded a food vendor, Mrs. Nkechi Jude Amadi with N250,000 for cleaning a drainage at Rumuokoro junction during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise last Saturday.

Nsirim who was visibly elated on seeing the woman packing out debris from the drainage said the money would assist her to rent a shop to carry out her business.

Describing her as a woman with a large heart, the council chairman said the gesture would serve as an eye opener to other residents of the local government, and urged them to emulate the good example of Mrs. Amadi.

According to him, if other residents would follow the footsteps of Mrs. Amadi, Port Harcourt city and its environs would always be clean.

Nsirim who monitored the sanitation exercise in Rumuokoro, Rumuagholu, Rumuodomaya and Rukpokwu axis of  the local government noted that the Rivers State Government had banned all forms of street trading, and charged traders within the Rumuokoro junction to move into the newly constructed Rumuagholu Market.

The council boss who formally opened the market for business and gave out 40 per cent of the stalls to the Rumuagholu community said the remaining 60 per cent would be run by the council.

He, therefore, directed traders to move into the market without payment of any fee within the first two weeks until the council came up with a rate.

While appointing Mr. Bekwele Weli as the Market Master, Nsirim stressed the need for peace and unity.

The council chairman also announced that his administration had commenced a campaign to keep the local government clean, and directed welders, block moulders, mechanics and other artisans to fence off their business premises within seven days or face the wrath of the council, stressing that exposing their wares to the public had been defacing Port Harcourt city and its environs.

He explained that his administration would always support the governor of the state, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi to develop the state to world class, and urged residents of the  state to imbibe the spirit of cleanliness, saying,  “cleanliness is next to Godliness.”
