The outgoing Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, Mr Suleiman Abba has reiterated that a constructive Police and community engagement could produce positive results in crime prevention, detection and enhance public security.

Mr Abba made this assertion in his address at the 2012 opening of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Rivers State Command held at the Police Officers Mess, Forces Avenue Old GRA, Port Harcourt last Thursday.

According to him, the police would continue to improve on its quality of security delivery in the communities, as well as encourage police community partnership, adding that, “The current improvement in the quality of security delivery in Rivers State is not only a consequence of the hard-work and painstaking supervision of the command anti-crime structure, but also as a result of the constructive partnership, support we continue to enjoy from genuine stakeholders such as the PCRC, and most especially the enormous support from the Rivers State government.”

He assured that the command would always respond appropriately to calls involving security challenges by constantly re-strategising all its key elements of crime prevention and public security.

Mr. Abba, who was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) said the present police administration had embarked on deliberate policies designed to bridge the apparent gap between the police and the community, and bring the police closer to the people through training and retraining to foster friendly disposition to members of the public, respect for human rights, prompt response to distress calls and a visible adherence to corrupt practices.

The State Police boss thanked members of PCRC, “The PCRC in Rivers State has proven itself as a worthy partner of the Rives State Police Command,” saying that, “The PCRC represents a practical component of the concept of community policing, a philosophy which seeks to promote partnership between the police and community.

Earlier, the chairman of PCRC, Rivers State Command, Hon. Austen Yong, disclosed the theme of this years PCRC programme, “Fortifying the Police Community Partnership for Community Safety”was very apt.
