A Nigerian athlete, Yakubu Adesokan, has set a new world record at the ongoing 2012 Paralympics Powerlifting Qualifier Championship, the National Sports Commission (NSC) said in Abuja.

The NSC said in a statement by Mrs Efe Ovuakporie, a Press Officer in the Commission, that Adesokan set the record by lifting 177 kg in the competition in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Adesokan is participating in the 48 kg weight category of the qualifiers, it said, adding that no less than 46 countries were participating in the qualifiers.

“Adesokan’s feat has erased the former record of 175 kg in the powerlifting event,’’ the statement said.
