The governorship election scheduled to hold in Sokoto this weekend has compelled the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) to postpone its U-18 Championships.

The federation’s President, Yusuf Dauda, told newsmen over the weekend that the competition would have held between February 23 and March 4.

He also said that the security threats posed by the Boko Haram sect, especially in the northern parts of the country, did not favour bringing together players and officials in Sokoto now.

“The situation does not give us room to organise an event now even though Sokoto has good handball facilities,” he said.

Dauda said that a new date would be announced for the championships as soon as the election was conducted.

He said the federation was set to reintroduce its Super Cup.

“The initiative is to have good programmes because we are blessed with talents and we need to engage them in competitions to get the best out of them,” Dauda said.

The HFN had earlier postponed its camp for players identified at the 2011 National Open Championships and National League which would have started this month.
