The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Oyo State, Mr Godwin Ogagaoghene, yesterday in Ibadan said the commission would reduce road traffic accidents by 30 per cent this year.

Ogagaoghene, who spoke on the strategies of the FRSC to make roads in the state safer, said the commission would also strictly enforce road safety rules and regulations.

He told newsmen that the FRSC would also initiate public enlightenment programmes on how to achieve good road driving habits.

“We want to use this year to talk to people more, to enlighten them more on the need to ensure that our roads are safe, and apart from that, we want to also improve on our enforcement, adding that this year, we would be clamping down on erring motorists like never before, as this is with a bid to ensuring that our roads are safer,’’ he said.

Ogagaoghene said an aspect of the enlightenment programme would focus on creating awareness on responsibilities of road users.

He argued that some motorists do not attach importance to vehicle insurance, saying:

“People think that when they have an insurance certificate, it is like they just have it for fun.

“But no, this is what the law demands you should have. It has its own benefits; in case of Third Party insurance, the third party is not left to suffer.

“But people look at them and say, ‘I will not have an accident,’ and they wish it away.

“ But then when it happens, they have no solution to it. That is how people think, ’’ Ogagaoghene said.

The FRSC boss appealed to motorists to continue to obey traffic rules and regulations.

“When they do this, it is easier and cheaper for them and if they obey, they will get to their destination safely.

“ But when they fail to do so, they get involved in traffic gridlock and crashes,” he added.
