Fayemi Tasks NUJ On Investigative Journalism
Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi says investigative journalism will help to unravel some of the security challenges facing the country.
He said such investigations would save the country from drifting into anarchy and also assist security agencies to unravel the various security issues confronting the nation.
Fayemi, stated this in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday when he received the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Malam Mohammed Garba, who paid him a courtesy visit.
The governor expressed confidence in the ability of the Nigerian media to “unravel the mystery behind the perpetrators of the unrest that now characterised the northern part of Nigeria’’.
“Investigative journalism seemed to have disappeared from the terrain of journalism because of these issues we are confronting.
“If the Police or other security agencies collectively are not living up to their reputation, the media would have gone beyond the line to talk to those who are really the masterminds, not the foot soldiers.’’
Earlier, Garba had commended the governor for the developmental strides recorded in the state, which he noted, had brought about improvements across the state.
“Personally, I have been monitoring your activities; analysing reports coming from the state, and I want to say that you have been doing very well.
“I have never seen a media man in government who has not succeeded.
“I want to believe that by the time you are four years in office, the people of the state would see a lot of improvement in terms of infrastructure and other initiatives that would better the lots of the people.”
Mohammed also commended the governor for his support to the union in the state, which he said, had helped to enhance the welfare of journalists.
He called on the state governments and other proprietors of media houses across the country to properly fund the organisations for the effective discharge their duties.
