The Enugu State government has directed security agencies in the state to henceforth arrest and prosecute violators of the current ban on the unauthorised use of government number plates and other insignia in the state.

A statement signed by the Chief Security Officer to Governor Sullivan Chime, Mr. Fidelis Ogarabe, said the security agencies would in addition impound the vehicles used by the offenders.

He noted that certain unauthorised persons more especially former officials of government have continued to use Enugu State government number plates and other insignia on their vehicles despite several previous warnings to desist from such act.

Mr Ogarabe said that the prohibition on the unauthorised use of government number plates had become more imperative in the light of the serious security challenges facing the nation today.

He warned that no exemptions would be made in the enforcement of the ban, pointing out that “For the avoidance of doubt, the state government hereby restates that the prohibition of such unauthorised and illegal use of government number plates is still in force. The government has therefore directed security agencies in the state to henceforth arrest and prosecute violators of this ban and impound their vehicles”.

Mr Ogarabe, however, further advised the general public to report violators of the ban to the security agencies for necessary action.

Meanwhile, Governor Sullivan Chime has expressed shock and  regret over the death of the Acting News Editor of Guardian Newspapers, Mr. Benjamin Ukwuoma, describing it as a great loss to the Media industry and the country at large.

Chime had in a statement issued in Enugu by his Chief Press Secretary, Barr. Chukwudi Achife, said that the Editor’s death was particularly saddening, as it came barely three months after the demise of the Founder and Publisher of Guardian Newspapers Mr. Alex Ibru.

He described Ukwuoma as an exemplary journalist who devoted his professional life to the promotion of issues and values that enhanced sustainable development and rapid advancement of the country.

The Governor, therefore, conveyed his sincere condolences to both the Management of Guardian Newspapers and the family of the deceased and prayed that God would give them the fortitude to bear the sad loss.
