Board 33 Private Waste Disposal Firms
Chairman, Delta Waste Management Board, Chief Olori Magege, says the board has registered 33 private waste disposal firms under the Private Sector Partnership (PSP) initiative.
Magege told newsmen in Asaba that the board was making efforts to register more firms under the initiative in order to make waste disposal faster and more efficient.
He said in addition to the firms registered under PSP, the local governments registered other companies.
He said although there was a need for those who registered with the councils to register with the board, their inability to do so did not make them illegal since waste management was the responsibility of local governments.
Magege said the board was an interventionist agency with the responsibility of monitoring and supervising waste disposal.
He said that the board had called on firms approved by the councils to register with the board without delay to ensure effective monitoring and supervision.
The chairman said he had no doubt about the existence of some unregistered companies but that none had been arrested.
“Those not registered with the board or the councils are not recognised, though they exist but we are yet to apprehend any and if we do we will apply the appropriate sanction,’’ he said.
