Weightlifters Begin Camping This Month
Secretary, Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Uche Onwumeh, has said that weightlifters would begin their camping for the African Olympic qualifiers anytime from now.
The lifters were earlier scheduled to start camping in the first week of the month but the exercise was disrupted by the recent protests over the removal of petrol subsidy.
Onwumeh said that the federation would meet this week to decide the venue for training for the competition planned to hold in March in Nairobi, Kenya.
“We are just about starting to prepare for the African qualifiers after the six days of strike. Camping will open later this month and screening of athletes will begin immediately.
“For now, we don’t know the categories and number of weightlifters to be involved but there will be a board meeting this week to clarify this.
“Camping was supposed to have opened earlier this month but the strike affected the planning and arrangement and I pray it doesn’t affect performance because time is not on our side,” she said.
Onuhumeh urged athletes, coaches and officials to put the strike behind and get ready for action before it becomes too late.
