Three Arraigned For Alleged Manslaughter
Two men and a woman were on Friday arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly causing the death of a pregnant woman, Ms Seyi Akinsanya.
The men, Adebayo Oloke (29) and Tunde Omolayo (38) and their woman accomplice, Funmi Akinjomo (53) are standing trial on a one-count of causing Akinsanya’s death.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the allegation levelled against them.
Police prosecutor, Asp. Emmanuel Essien, said that Oloke and Omolayo were the first and second accused persons respectively in this case.
He said that the first and second accused persons, on December 12, 2011 at Olatunji St., Ilaje, Bariga, took the deceased, who was in labour pains, to an unauthorised maternity centre.
He said they took the deceased to Akinjomo’s house, the third accused person, who allegedly claimed to be in a position to deliver Akinsanya of her baby.
He said the deceased allegedly bleed to death “due to the unprofessional handling of the delivery process“.
The prosecutor alleged that the deceased died due to loss of ‘so much‘ blood.
Essien also told the court that the three accused had attempted to dispose of Akinsanya’s body inside a lagoon when they were apprehended by the police.
Their offence, according to Essien, was contrary to Section 221 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Magistrate M.O Olawunmi ordered that the three accused be remanded in prison custody pending when the court would get an advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The case was adjourned to January 20 for trial.
