Barely six months after Rivers State hosted a historic and successful 17th edition of the National Sports Festival (NSF), Christened Garden City Games 2011, the state has declared its readiness to stage an impeccable West African Public Service Games (WAPSGA).

This was stated recently by the Commissioner for Sports in the state, Hon Fred Igwe, when he inaugurated a 15-man Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the forthcoming maiden edition of WAPSGA scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt later in the year.

Hon Igwe also said that the state has the capacity to host national and international tournaments, owing to the prevalence of world class facilities and organisational savvy.

“We are ready to host West Africa and World sporting tournaments, because we have one of the best sporting facilities in Africa.

“As I am talking to you, the security situation in the state has improved tremendously,” Igwe said.

Hon Igwe assured members of the Main Organising Committee (MOC) that the state would not disappoint them.

Speaking at the occasion, the chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Mrs Sintiki Ugbe said that the objective of the tournament was to promote regional integration, promote socio-cultural and economic activities within the participating countries.

“This competition is not all about winning medals, that is not our aim, our target is to ensure that we use sports as a vehicle to promote regional integration and improve on social, cultural and economic values,” Ugeb said.
