The joint chairmen of Research in Motion (RIM) Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis have resigned their appointments as part of a long-awaited shake-up at the troubled Canadian maker of the Black Berry (BB) smart phone.

RIM pointed out that Lazaridis will still act as vice-chairman and head of a new board committee on innovation.

The organisation also said that Balsillie would leave the company, but will serve as its director.

It further announced that the former chief operating officer for product and sales, Thorsten Heins is to serve as its new chief executive.

The Tide’s investigation has it that Heins joined the services of the company sometime in 2007.

The phone maker, explained that the changes is an orderly succession initiated by the two former chief executives.

The Tide gathered that RIM shares, shed more than three-quarters of their value in less than two years.

The company which wanted to remain in shape managed to respond to some mounting competition especially from Apple’s iphone and Android-based services.

Amazon, Samsung, Nokia have been named as the possible suitors, should the speculation of RIM takeover is anything to go by.

The new chief executive, Heins, noted that he has to ensure that RIM ranks among the top three world’s wireless leaders.

He also informed that he will solidify Black Berry’s position in the corporate market.
