The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) last Friday declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),  Senator George Sekibo winner of the re-run election in the Rivers East Senatorial District.

Senator Sekibo won with 472,224 votes while the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Hon Lasbery Amadi came second with 18,109 votes.

Announcing the results of the re-run, last Friday, the returning officer of INEC for the senatorial re-run election Dr Otu Ekpenyong declared the PDP candidate winner and said 12 political parties contested the election.

Mr Chizi Michael Atata of the Action Alliance (AA) Party came third with 14,371 votes. The Action Alliance candidate occasioned the re-run by his petition over his exdusion from the April 9, 2011 poll.

The Appeal Court had ordered for a re-run election after cancelling the result of the senatorial district as a result of exclusion of the Action Alliance.

Meanwhile Senator George Sekibo has thanked the people of Rivers East Senatorial District for re-electing him. In a message titled “ Thank you for re-affirming my election,” Senator Sekibo said by voting for him, they took a wise decision, adding that their votes will not be in vain.

He particularly thanked the state Governor, Rt. Hon Chibuike Amaechi, his wife, Dame Judith, the state PDP chairman, Chief Nyesom Wike and all stakeholders as well as pastors orphans, widows and the physically challenged who mobilized their members for the election.
