The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, has at its recent National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Awka asked the federal and other tiers of government to implement the minimum wage of N18,000 payment to employees.

The union stated its position in a communiqué issued at its NEC meeting by reaffirming its position on the compliance of the governments at all levels with the National Minimum Wage Act without delay.

The communiqué signed by the National Secretary, Chief Shuaibu Usman Leman said government at various levels must obey the new minimum wage regime law and accordingly pay all employees.

The communiqué urged the Federal Government to have its priorities well spelt out, so as not to give an impression of misplaced priority.

On the issue of subsidy removal, the NUJ’s NEC advised the Federal Government to listen to the voice of reason as removing the subsidy would cause untold hardship to Nigerians without putting in place palliative measures to ameliorate such hardship on Nigerians.

The communiqué urged the government at various levels to uphold the relevant provision of the country’s constitution which stipulates that the responsibility of government is to protect the lives and property of its citizens.

The Mohammed Garba led national leadership was commended for its visionary and focused leadership of the union in the country. Sequel to that, Mohammed Garba was unanimously adopted for a second term in office as the election comes up in May this year.
