Enugu Pledges To Support Nigerian Legion
The Enugu State Government has expressed its readiness to continue to support members of the Nigerian Legion in their programmes designed to make life better for members and families of their departed colleagues.
The State Governor, Barrister Sullivan Chime, made the promise at the launching of this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day and Emblems Appeal Week held Monday at Okpara Square, Enugu.
Governor Chime who was represented by the State Head of Service, Mr. Dennis Eze, also called on Nigerians to see the Remembrance Day celebration not as mere annual ritual but a serious national duty aimed at immortalising those who pay the supreme sacrifice defending the fatherland and upkeep of those still alive.
The Governor urged Nigerians to consider the commitment and selfless services rendered by the Legion, pointing out that although no amount would be enough to pay for such services, it is important to identify with their plight.
The State Chief Executive described the Nigerian Armed Forces as the example of commitment and patriotism to their fatherland worthy of emulation.
Earlier in an address, the Chairman, Nigerian Legion, Enugu State Council, Chief George Amalu, enjoined all and sundry to recall the services rendered by the fallen heroes and to support his members in the Emblems Appeal.
Chief Amalu indicated the preparedness of his members to engage in agricultural activities to help boost food production in the state and appealed to the state government for allocation of farmland to enable them actualise their aim.
He also appealed to the local government chairmen in the state who is owing them the sum of N750,000 and all those who made pledges to them in the past to honour their pledges to the legion to enable them carry out their programmes.
The Chairman enumerated some of the achievements of the legion in the state to include granting of scholarships to some students into the tertiary institutions in Nigeria, continuous empowering of the wives of the fallen heroes and assisting bed-ridden members of the legion, among others.
In a brief remarks, the Chairman of ALGON Enugu State and also the Chairman of Enugu South Local Government Council, Hon Nwabueze Okafor launched the Emblems with the sum of N500,000 on behalf of his colleagues and assured that the pledges made by his colleagues would be redeemed.
The Emblems Appeal Week celebration was attended by top government officials and military and paramilitary personnel.
