Enugu State Governor Sullivan Chime has promised to renovate all public schools in the state.

Chime said this recently in Enugu during a facility tour of public primary and secondary schools in Enugu to assess the needs of public schools.

The governor said that upgrading the schools would encourage parents to enrol their children into public schools instead of patronising private schools.

Chime said that classroom blocks, fences and toilet facilities would be provided in the schools to make learning easier, adding that re-roofing would be done where necessary.

Mrs Kate Eneh, the head teacher, Housing Estate Primary School, Trans- Ekulu, urged the governor to provide a conducive learning environment for the pupils and students.

Our correspondent  recalls that the state government recently ordered the closure of 83 private schools said to be operating below the minimum standards set by the government.

The state executive council similarly approved the closure of additional 68 private schools in the state after general tour of primary and secondary schools facilities.

Meanwhile, the governor had ordered the arrest of people, who occupied any portion of the roads in the state for their selfish ends.

Chime, who gave the order in Enugu while inspecting public schools, frowned at the way residents destroyed public utilities in the state.

He was particularly irked at the indiscrimininate way residents used portion of asphalt roads as platforms for mixing their cement for the construction of their private houses and other structures.

The governor, who was held in traffic following the construction of a building on Old Airport Rd in Emene near Enugu, wondered why people should turn the roads to workshops.

This road was built with meagre resources of the state. It is wrong to mix concrete on asphalt roads because it destroys the road. Just get them arrested, the governor ordered.

He also banned the washing of vehicles on roads, pointing out that the chemicals used for car wash were capable of destroying the road.

Our correspondent reports that the governor embarked on the inspection of public primary and secondary  school in the state to ascertain the facilities needed to improve them.
