Delta Tasks Tradtional Rulers On Security

The Delta State Government, has urged traditional rulers  to strengthen the security situation in the state to check the emerging challenges.

The state governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, gave the charge on Wednesday in Asaba, at a meeting with royal fathers from the 25 local government areas of the state.

According to him, to stem the tide of crime in the state, traditional rulers must play their role in their various communities.

“I called this meeting for us to look at certain issues, though they are national issues, but we have our security challenges as a state in the last few months. “These challenges are not peculiar to our state but they are occurring in our state. We have challenges with kidnapping, armed robbery and of recent, explosions in certain parts of the state.

“I have invited you, our royal fathers, because I believe we all have a role to play.

“What we intend to do is that in the next two weeks, we are going to register community leaders in the various local government councils”, he said.

The governor added that most of the crimes recorded in the state were in hotels, adding that the government would send bills to the State house of Assembly on operations of hotels. “We want to know every occupant that comes into the hotels in the state,” he said, adding that investment on security would be given more attention in this year’s budget.

“We are going to invest more on that infrastructure and as a state government this year, we will work closely with security agencies to improve on security infrastructure”.

The governor also enlightened the traditional rulers on the benefits of deregulation of the petroleum sector and urged them to pass the message to their subjects.

Uduaghan assured them that the Federal Government would not renege on its promises to invest the proceeds from the subsidy efficiently and effectively for the benefit of all Nigerians.

Some of the royal fathers who spoke to newsmen after the closed door meeting, pledged their support and commitment to ensure improved security in the state.

The former State Chairman, Delta Council of Traditional Rulers, Ogurimerime Okpara I, Ovie of Agbon, commended the governor for inviting them to the meeting and pledged their support to the government.

He, however, called on the government to restore security orderlies to traditional rulers to enable them perform their roles effectively in their various communities.
