Council Boss Postpones Butchers’ Election
The Executive Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council of Rivers State, Prince Timothy Nsirim, has postponed the election of new executive members of the National Butchers Association of Nigeria, Rivers State chapter, Oginigba/Trans Amadi Slaughter for security reasons.
Nsirim who made the position known in a statement issued in Port Harcourt said the action was taken after due consultation with the Peace and Security Committee of the council and the security advice obtained from the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba.
He, therefore, directed that the executive committee of the association led by its Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Maisundu Bali should continue to pilot the affairs of the association until a new election date was fixed and election conducted when the security situation improves.
The council chairman further stated that anybody or group of persons found to be flouting the order should be prepared to face its consequences, as the local government council would not fold its arms and watch those he described as miscreants to “take over and cause pandemonium, harassment, intimidation, breach of peace and breakdown of law and order in the association, all in the name of election and leadership.”
He, however, noted that the postponement would be lifted and election conducted to fill the various positions within the association “when the local government council was convinced that there is considerable peace, security and willingness of members of the association to co-exist and associate freely as a body without any form of external interference whatsoever.”
Nsirim, therefore, urged security agencies to “fish out those who may wish to disobey the order, and accordingly enforce the law to its fullest.”
