Commissioner Identifies Constraint To Effective Waste Disposal
The Anambra Commissioner for Environment, Dr Michael Egbebike, has said that inadequate funding constituted a major constraint to effective management and disposal of waste in major cities in the state.
Speaking with newsmen in Awka recently, Egbebike said:“We are constrained by the lack of adequate funds in the disposal of waste in our major cities.
“In everything you do as a human being, fund is very important for it to be worthwhile and successful.”
He also said that the ministry lacked vehicles and receptacles for operational efficiency and effectiveness.
According to him, the insufficiency of the necessary working materials has hampered the management of waste.
“We do not have enough receptacles and vehicles; so, we are basically struggling with the little we have to evacuate refuse.
“We have, however, achieved one objective of removing waste from the gutters into the receptacles.’’
The commissioner said that the government had ordered for new vehicles and receptacles in its efforts to ensure efficient and effective waste disposal in the state.
